John
Carr developed a passion for travel at a young age. His formative
years spent living in Trinidad, London, Chicago, Cairo and Paris
only fueled his desire to see more of the world. After getting an
MBA from Thunderbird in 1989, John began a 7-year career at Baxter,
a global medical/pharma company, where he managed a variety of marketing
programs in Europe, the Middle-East and Latin America.
With corporate marketing experience under his belt and an abundance
of sky-miles to his name, John embarked on a sabbatical in 1997
to explore the world from a decidedly more local perspective. For
18 months he hiked, biked and hitch-hiked across Asia and parts
of Latin America. Highlights from his journey include swimming with
whale sharks in the Philippines, riding shot-gun on a cargo boat
up the Mekong in Laos and attending the christening of his godchild
in Mexico.
John laid down his backpack and took up the corporate sword again
in 1998, joining GlobalSight, a software and services start-up company
based in San Jose, California. As director of globalization strategy,
he pioneered the development of global branding and e-commerce strategies
for companies such as HP, Gartner and Dupont. After 4 successful
years in the corporate trenches, John decided it was time to hang
up his corporate hat and focus on his love of travel which led to
co-founding Off-the-Rails in 2003.
